Elisabeth
Elisabeth Roos is a costume designer who has been working on an independent project that explores portraiture and costume. She’s chosen to start with three women from recent history who have been vanguards in their areas. Starting with Julia Child, Maya Angelou and Rachel Carson, Elisabeth uses the form of a specific coat style and then uses the surface to tell that person’s story. In the case of Julia Child, she began with a traditional chef’s toke and then ripped it apart and reconstructed it with embroidery and applique to weave a story that combines Elisabeth's experience at Smith College (Julia Child’s alma mater) and Julia Child’s contributions to the culinary arts. The Maya Angelou coat is all silks patterned together with embroidery phrases from her writings and a large bird. The Rachel Carson uses the form of a traditional L.L. Bean field coat that is all hand felted. The front of the coat tells of Carson’s work in marine ecology and the back tells of Carson's fight with cancer. A fourth coat is in the works portraying Anna Morrow Lindbergh.
