Weisgard
Leonard Weisgard (1916-2000) was an award winning children’s book illustrator and author. He illustrated many books written by Margaret Wise Brown and in 1946 won a Caldecott Metal for his illustrations for “The Little Island” by Margaret Wise Brown. My mother and Leonard were cousins and as such our families got together regularly. In 1969 Leonard and his family moved to Denmark to live. All of his illustrations were stored in big steamer trunks for many years. In 2006 Leonard’s children, Abigail, Chrissy, Ethan and I put together an exhibit of his illustrations at Keene State College’s Thorne Sagenforph Art Gallery. As the work was arriving over here in the USA, I was documenting everything and framing the pieces for the show. I now manage this collection of work that is here in the USA. This involves documenting each piece, taking care of the conservation of the work through the Williamstown Art and Conservation Center and having the work stored with ARTEX. The photos in this section are just a few of the numerous pieces of art by Leonard Weisgard.
