Down and Across is an ongoing series that feature both painting and drawing. The concept is the idea that the matrix of the standard crossword puzzle in the daily newspaper represents a grid pattern, not unlike the pixilation of digital images blown up to a large format. For that reason, I start each piece with a collage of crossword puzzles that I’ve completed as a backdrop to the portrait I draw or paint on top. Completing a cross word puzzle is similar to making a piece of art in that there is a great deal of problem solving going on!
